A Prairie Home Companion Click here to hear the Hot Club's recent performance on A Prairie Home Companion, February 22, 2003 ![]() Home Ranch The Home Ranch in Clark, Colorado is a year-round guest ranch and, now, a horsemanship center. Incidentally, Elana used to work there as a wrangler and fiddler. We always like to stop in and say hi to our favorite animals there -- especially Fudge and Pancho -- and play a few tunes. Molokai Ranch Molokai, Hawaii. This was our first big trip, back in 1997. We played the Molokai Ranch Rodeo and helped judge the stew cookoff. Molokai ranch is gorgeous and founded to be as environmentally and ecologically unobtrusive as possible (e.g. canvas bungalows that flap wildly in the wind so that you feel like you're out in the middle of the south pacific or something, which, come to think of it, you actually are). Sitkalidak Lodge Old Harbor, Kodiak Island, Alaska: Big huge fish and really really nice people. Also big huge whales, big huge bears, puffins, emerald islands, friendly porpoises. A tad off the beaten path! Amazon Conservation Team An organization that, among other things, funds shamans in the Amazon so that they can pass on their esoteric knowledge of ethnobotany, or how wild plants can be used for medicinal purposes. We (the Hot Club of Cowtown) are hoping to undertake a project in 2003, in conjunction with you, our Hot Club fans, to benefit this organization, so stay tuned. The Continental Club Our home away-from home while we are at home, Steve Wertheimer and everybody at the Continental Club have been over-the-top gracious to us going on five years now. Where should you go to hear great music when you come down to Austin? No question. Huunhuurtu Elana's favorite cowboy band, though they happen to be from Mongolia. Taraf de Haidouks Elana's favorite band in the universe. Gheorge Angel, the fiddler in the hat (below) must be seen to be believed. According to Elana, he came over to her house one night in 2001 and jammed with her and Whit in her living room. He took time out only very briefly to chain smoke and to call Romania from her bedroom. ![]() Vince Giordano The masterful and ultra-charismatic Vince Giordano and his band the Nighthawks, who we love and go see at the Cajun whenever we are passing through NYC on a Monday or Thursday night. ![]() Joe Kerr This is pianist/composer Joe Kerr's home page. Joe plays on much of our Ghost Train CD and is also featured on our second CD, Tall Tales. He's totally friggin' fantastic. Elana met Joe in France in 1992 where they forged a fast and permanent bond playing "You are My Sunshine" at a pigroast in the French countryside. Brock Mumford Our friend Matt Munisteri's band. The band is named for Brock Mumford, a friend of Buddy Bolden's who was last seen in Paris in 1923. Matt and his band can be seen nowadays, though, and we like to be in the audience when they are. Johnny Gimble Need we say more? The Lucky Stars Our western swingin' compadres in Hollywoood. The Lucky Stars feature, among other stars, Dave Stuckey, who has cowritten a bunch of our songs with Whit, our friend Sage Guyton, and Jeremy Wakefield, the the most extraordinary of the extraordinary steel players (every time we see Johnny Gimble he asks about Jeremy-"Hi Elana, Hi Whit, Hi Jake...yeah, great...ah, ...but where's JW?" |
